Theresa Owens is not your typical bike rider. She doesn’t train and didn’t even own a bike until last year.

Yet the mortgage sales production assistant recently logged 150 miles in Wachovia’s Maroone MS150 Bike Tour. The bike ride from Miami to Key Largo, Fla., and back benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Owens wasn't the only Wachovia employee participating among the 2,500 riders. The tour featured Team Wachovia — a group of 33 employees — who also volunteered to raise money for education, programs and services for MS patients.

“A close friend of mine suffered with MS and eventually succumbed to it, which drove my decision to participate in the tour,” said Owens about why she first signed up for the Wachovia-sponsored and presented event in South Florida. “I was delighted that Wachovia shared my passion for fighting this terrible disease.”

In addition to riding, Owens has raised more than $6,000 each year to become one of the event’s top fund-raisers. So far, Wachovia’s 2007 tour already has raised more than $1.5 million in the fight against MS in South Florida, and pledges are still coming in.

“An event like this allows us to really bring the face of Wachovia’s community commitment to the forefront,” said Will Davies of Commercial Banking in Miami, who served as co-captain of the tour with Manny Sanchez of Retail Service in Miami.

As difficult as her battle was against heat, humidity and fatigue over the two-day tour, Owens will be back on the bike again in 2008.

“This was a huge challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges those with MS face every day,” she said. “Adrenaline kept me going and accomplishment helped me recover. I’ll be right there again next year!”
